Calexico goes into SPACE!

On May 31st, the Space Shuttle Discovery took off toward the International Space station, carrying Commander Mark Kelly on his third flight into space. During shuttle flights, friends and family of astronauts are allowed to choose the music that is played to wake up the pilots from sleep in space. His wife, Gabrielle Giffords, a U.S. representative from Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, has chosen songs to wake the crew on two days. One day will be the bugle call Kelly used to wake up to when he went to college at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the other – CALEXICO! Their song, “Crystal Frontier,” will be beamed into space, and waking up the astronauts! Come on – it’s pretty exciting. Read more about this story right here.

Our thoughts are with Kelly, Giffords, and all the rest of the astronauts and families for a safe mission and trip home – and thanks for the solar system shout out!

For more info about the mission, check this out.

So… if Martians and astronauts are going to get to hear “Crystal Frontier” for free, why not you, right? So, we’re pleased to offer up a free MP3 download of “Crystal Frontier” for the rest of the space mission, through landing day June 14.

You’ll be able to actually hear the astronauts waking up to Calexico on Flight Day 14, June 13, by checking out NASA TV live at around 3am EST (check your local provider). If you miss it, starting at 8pm every hour on the hour they run the highlights starting with the wake up song. Also, the whole thing is live on www.nasa.gov – just click on watch NASA TV live.

Special Thanks to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a big Calexico fan, and her husband, Shuttle Commander Mark Kelly for making this happen.

Carried To Dust

Two years after “Garden Ruin”, Calexico has returned and is offering up “Carried To Dust”, the new full-length record due September 9, 2008.

For “Carried To Dust”, Calexico co-founders Joey Burns and John Convertino called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest work to date. The band lineup that solidified around “Feast of Wire” (Paul Niehaus, Jacob Valenzuela, Martin Wenk, Volker Zander) is back again, along with a number of guests, including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs, and Pieta Brown.

This new record is a shining example of Calexico’s commitment to constantly molting and redefining who they are. A continued examination of their sources of inspiration, “Carried To Dust” is the next step in Calexico’s ongoing quest of moving forward while never turning its back on the past.

Along with extending the collaborative bridges with other artists, “Carried To Dust” also reflects Calexico’s amazing live shows, as well as underscoring the band’s restraint and beauty. A remarkably well-rounded album, “Carried To Dust” showcases every aspect of Calexico’s exceptional talents.
